Kent

Kent was originally named after the English town of the same name and was once known for its agricultural production until the Howard Hanson Dam was completed in 1963, which opened the area to residential and commercial development.

Kent is one of the newest communities to be connected to the Puget Sound Transit commuter rail train, the Sounder. The Kent Station was completed in 2002 and has a large common parking garage with plenty of parking. The trip from Kent to downtown Seattle is a 27-minute ride and has become more popular each year it has been in operation. In addition to the commuter train, Seattle Metro Transit and Puget Sound Transit offer excellent Express bus service to downtown as well lots of choices for commute times.

Downtown Kent is a small historical district with many shops to explore and fun restaurants that offer Greek, Italian, sushi and other choices, coffee houses and a good sized bakery. There are several events each spring and summer sponsored by the City of Kent and various booster organizations, the oldest of which is Canterbury Days with demonstrations in full Middle Ages costumes, equestrian demonstrations and a Kids Fair.

Recently, to meet greater demand and accommodate the recreational enthusiasms of Kent residents, the Kent Parks Department added sports such as field hockey and LaCrosse and increased the number of soccer leagues.

The Flaming Geyser State Park, located just outside of Kent, existed as a private park since its opening in the 1920s until the 1960s when it was rescued from bankruptcy by the State Park system. Now, this 480-acre day use park with more than three miles of freshwater shoreline along the Green River features methane seeps or “geysers,” and a wide variety of outdoor activities. Hiking, biking and horse trails are available for public use. Freshwater swimming and fishing are also available as well as white-water kayaking. Nature enthusiasts can enjoy bird watching and animal watching. Bears, bobcats, coyotes, eagles, hawks, herons, minks and ospreys are some of the viewable wildlife in the area. A separate 25-acre open field is available for equestrian use. Remote control, model airplane flying is also allowed in certain areas of the park.

The Riverbend Golf Complex offers seasoned golf players an adequate challenge. This facility includes an 18-hole and a 9-hole course. The appearance of a wide open playing field may trick golfers into thinking that the course may be too easy, but these courses play hard and fast with plenty of water and bunkers to test skills. Also located on site is a driving range with an instruction center, three pro shops featuring the new Riverbend Merchandise Center, and an 18-hole miniature golf course. When golfers get hungry, they can partake of the outstanding food at the Fire Creek Grill, located on the course.
